Roadworks 'causing havoc' as residents struggle to get out of Stoke-on-Trent estate

A Stoke-on-Trent road which has been shut for over a week is causing a 'nightmare' residents say.
Barlaston Road in Newstead has been closed since last Tuesday for emergency gas repairs.
Residents say that the diversion in place is causing issues, with traffic backed up and even damage to vehicles due to the state of some of the country roads. The current traffic order to close the road is set to end on Tuesday 3 June 2025.
To alleviate some of the traffic issues residents have called for access to be restored off the estate via Sherborne Close which connects to the industrial estate.
The road was blocked by Stoke-on-Trent City Council a number of years ago, however a number of residents have contacted the council to raise the issue.
Resident Sandra Barker said: "The roads closed at the Douglas Macmillan and it's the only real way on to the estate other than going all the way around Cocknage. The roads up there are absolutely terrible, there are cars getting stuck.
"I passed by the other day and an ambulance was stuck there, it's absolutely horrendous. There's a road closed at the bottom of the estate which closed over 30 years ago and as a community we are all wanting the road reopened because it would allow another way off the estate.
"We know it's an emergency gas leak and it's got to be done, it's been well over a week now the roads have been closed and it's causing havoc."

As the road is closed buses have been unable to access the estate, this has meant that a number of pensioners and disabled people who live on the estate have struggled getting to the doctors or going shopping.
Alan Dimmelow has lived in Newstead for 66 years he said: "You've got loads of pensioners who just can't walk all that way into Blurton to catch a bus so they haven't been out.
"All the people who have got cars, it's costing them money for fuel because they've got to go all the way up to Wedgwood up Barlaston Road.
"I know a couple of people who have had their cars damaged, like the wing mirrors hit because it's so narrow.
"Another one damaged their spring because they tried to move over and part of the road was missing and they dropped. I'm worried about pensioners who might have had a doctor's appointment who have had to cancel because they can't walk that far."
Stoke-on-Trent City Council have been approached for comment regarding the restricted access at Sherborne Close on to the industrial estate. Cadent Gas, who are responsible for the emergency repair have also been contacted.
