Raw sewage pours down Stoke-on-Trent street after heavy rain
By SWNS 30th Mar 2026
Disgusted locals were left horrified when raw sewage gushed past their front doors during a rain storm.
Foul smelling waste poured down Paddock Rise in Trentham, Stoke-on-Trent, after two drains overflowed.
Heavy rainfall led to the drains overflowing at around 7.30pm on Tuesday (24 March).
Mum-of-one Rachel Hughes, 50, said her 11-year-old son realised something was wrong by the smell.
She said: "My son turned to me and held his nose, I went outside and saw raw sewage coming down the road.
"The road slopes so it was a stream of poo and waste going past people's homes and onto the pavements. It's a worry because it has happened before.
"The mess wasn't cleaned up until the next day which is just disgusting and is a biohazard."
Video shows the moment poo, toilet paper and nappies, cascaded down the road just feet from their front doors.
Another resident said: "It was gross. The morning after there was still clumps of poo and loo roll all over the place.
"The road is used by kids and mums with pushchairs. If they walk through it, it could make them or their little ones really sick.
"The smell was just awful. It reeked. We've warned the water company time and time again but it's like banging your head against a wall."
Severn Trent Water say the blockage was caused by tree roots growing into the pipe work.
A Severn Trent spokesperson said the blockage was caused by tree roots, and that teams would attend with specialised equipment to resolve the issue.
"While our crew was able to partially relieve the issue during their visit yesterday, they were unable to fully remove tree roots because of the heavy rain and will need return with specialist equipment to complete the job," they said.
"We will be attending site today to carry out further works and a thorough clean-up of the site.
"We understand how unpleasant this experience has been, and we're very sorry for any issues caused."
Labour MP Allison Gardner, who represents Stoke-on-Trent, said the latest sewage spill was "disgraceful".
