A Stoke-on-Trent town is set to receive changes to transport and public spaces.

Longton is set to benefit from a city council scheme to improve pedestrian links between the bus and train stations, the town centre and the Tesco car park.

The proposals include a 'revised traffic layout' for Times Square, a new public space in front of the town hall as well as new red routes and a one-way system on the northbound side of Transport Lane.

Other proposals include a new mural, celebrating the history of the town, wider pavements between the train station and Market Street and additional tree planting.

It's hoped the scheme will improve congestion and bus services in the town.

The scheme has been funded from the government's Levelling Up Fund, Bus Service Improvement Plan and Transforming Cities Fund.

Cllr Finlay Gordon-McCusker, cabinet member for transport, regeneration and infrastructure at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said: "We want to make sure our town centres work for everyone which is why we are maximising this investment by co-ordinating a number of improvement schemes and delivering real benefits for residents.

"Our overall plan for the town is to create a network of improvements which will enhance the links between the railway and bus stations, the town centre and the retail park.

"We want to encourage more people into Longton, support existing businesses and provide a more attractive environment for residents, workers, shoppers and visitors. We also want to reduce congestion in the town centre and ensure our bus services remain reliable."

Stoke-on-Trent South Labour MP Dr Allison Gardner said the Levelling Up investment would create a "gateway" entrance to the town at Times Square with safer traffic flows, new paving, and tree planting.

She said: "It will make a real difference to the area outside the town hall where I have been pushing hard for the creation of a gateway into the town, making it easier for shoppers and visitors to access the area.

"Once the public consultation is completed, I will be pressing as hard as possible for the work to get underway. This is the regeneration that Longton and Stoke-on-Trent South has long deserved and needed."

People are being invited to have their say on the proposals during a three-week consultation which runs until Wednesday 6 August. There is an online survey which can be found here.

Alternatively, further details of the proposals will be available in Longton Indoor Market, Tesco Longton and Urban Wilderness CIC, inside the Longton Exchange, from Monday 21 July.

A public consultation event will also take place at Longton Indoor Market on Friday 1 August.

The Longton proposals form part of wider £6.5 million public realm plans, which also incorporate Burslem, Longton and Stoke.
