A man and a woman from Stoke-on-Trent have been arrested after a man died in a hit-and-run in Penkhull.

A 27-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man, both from Stoke-on-Trent, were arrested this morning (15 April) on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

51-year-old Christopher Deaville, from Stoke-on-Trent, died as a result of his injuries on Friday (11 April) at around 9pm after being hit by a car on Newcastle Lane in Penkull.

On the same night, officers found a black Mini Copper abandoned in an alleyway near Birks Street, just over a mile from the scene, which had been stolen overnight between Wednesday (9 April) and Thursday (10 April) from York Road in Stafford.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: "We have arrested two people this morning (15 April) as part of our investigation into a fatal non-stop collision in Stoke-on-Trent.

"It happened on Newcastle Lane in Penkhull at 9pm on Friday night (11 April). A black car collided with a pedestrian.

"The pedestrian, 51-year-old Christopher Deaville, from Stoke-on-Trent, tragically died as a result of his injuries.

"Detectives trawled the area and found a black Mini Cooper that had been abandoned in an alleyway near Birks Street.

"The car was badly damaged and had been stolen overnight between Wednesday (9 April) and Thursday (10 April) from York Road in Stafford.

"After carrying out more enquiries, we arrested a 27-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man, from Stoke-on-Trent, on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

"They are being questioned in custody."

Staffordshire Police is keen to speak to anyone with any information that can help officers with their investigation.

They believe the Mini was travelling at speed along Newcastle Lane, past the Marquis of Granby pub, onto Penkhull New Road.

The driver then turned right onto London Road and into the estate of Boothen Old Road, before getting to an alleyway off Birks Street and Campbell Road, where the car was later found abandoned.
