Plans to demolish and redevelop a church and associated community buildings in Fenton have been withdrawn before a decision was made.

The applicant, Mr Eddison Attu, planned to demolish Triumphant Christ Chapel, on City Road, and transform it into a new church with independent living facilities for children in social care.

Mr Attu also planned to build conference facilities, a cafe and communal spaces for the local community to use.

The 2490 square metre site is currently being used as a church, nursery and space for community events.

24 one-bedroom flats would be created for children in social care and 16 staff would be employed on site.

The building, on City Road, would have been demolished to allow these plans to take shape (Nub News).

James Purdie, from Children's Services at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, said: "This proposed home is too big. Whilst there is evidence that children can flourish in homes of up to about six beds (dependent on the individual children) these kind of very large homes would be much more likely to result in children becoming institutionalised.

"The large number of children all living on the same site would also likely result in inappropriate matching where children with incompatible needs were expected to live together.

"The staffing ratios also seem very low if there would be just one adult for 8 or 12 children. It would be challenging to maintain safety with so few staff - We would not be in support of this proposal."

These plans were withdrawn and no further action will be taken.
