Plans to reopen the upper floors of a Grade II-listed school in Stoke-on-Trent have been submitted to the local council.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council has submitted a planning application for "internal alterations to existing building to convert former Victorian first floor dormitories and girls teaching wing to create three classrooms, store rooms and toilets" at The Mount in Penkhull.

The Mount was built in 1803 by Josiah Spode II and the first and second floors have been unoccupied since the building was last in use as The Mount Education Centre in 2018.

The three new classrooms would be used by Year Six classes from The Willows Primary School, who currently occupy parts of the ground floor.

A Design and Access Statement, submitted as part of the application, says: "This application seeks permission to carry out internal alterations to allow three of the unoccupied upper-floor former education rooms to be brought back into use as classrooms by The Willows Primary School, whilst upgrading circulation routes allowing for further classrooms to be brought into use in the future.

"The ground floor of The Mount building serves The Willows Primary School, whilst the upper floors are used in part as storage, but are largely vacant.

"The proposals seek permission to convert the historic dormitories and girls wing at first floor level into three new classrooms and storerooms. Two new pupil WC's are also proposed to facilitate the new classrooms , and existing WC's will be refurbished to provide a staff WC and a unisex WC."

The existing Georgian and Victorian doors would be retained and upgraded to suit fire safety requirements and new Georgian-style, part-glazed timber panel doors would be installed on the ground floor as required.
