A new coffee shop could open in place of a vacant bar and dance venue in Stoke-on-Trent, if plans are approved by the city council.
A2 Developers has submitted a planning application for the "conversion of ground floor to two commercial units, change of use of first and second floor to eight one-bedroom self-contained apartments and replacement terrace enclosure to second floor" at 37 Tontine Street, Hanley.
The application site was previously used as a multi-storey bar and dance venue but it has been vacant for around 12 years and has "suffered significant disrepair".
A Design and Access Statement, submitted as part of the application, says: "The project involves the conversion and extension of an existing three-storey building (with a basement) that was formerly used as a multi-storey bar and dance floor.
"The proposal is to convert the ground floor into two commercial units, with a coffee shop and a corner shop, both of which will have stock rooms in the basement. The first and second floors will be converted into one-bedroom, single-occupancy apartments.
This proposal will revitalise 37 Tontine Street, providing high-quality commercial spaces at the ground floor and modern residential accommodation on the upper floors.
"The design respects the character of the conservation area, ensures fire safety, and promotes sustainability, thereby creating a safe, functional, and attractive development for the town centre."
Each of the eight one-bedroom flats would have individual kitchen/living areas, bedrooms and shower rooms. Existing windows would be retained to "maximise natural light and ventilation".
The full planning application can be viewed here.
