Man sentenced to over five years in prison following 'unrelenting' abuse
By The Editor 22nd Oct 2026
A man has been jailed after admitting coercive control, false imprisonment and intentional strangulation.
Nathan Bate, 46, of Caerphilly, Wales, was sentenced to five-years-and-five-months in prison at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Friday 16 October, after admitting abusing a woman for an extended period.
PC Deni Street, of Newcastle-under-Lyme local policing team, was the officer in the case.
Speaking following sentencing, the officer said: "Bate was unrelenting in pursuing and controlling the victim who suffered immeasurable harm from his abuse.
"The survivor showed immense courage in coming forward to us and sharing what she had been through, so we could gather a significant amount of evidence against Bate which led to him pleading guilty in court.
"I hope the sentence goes someway in comforting the survivor and that she can continue to rebuild her life knowing Bate is serving a custodial sentence."
It comes after Staffordshire Police officers were called in 2023 after a woman was "dragged into a vehicle" and assaulted by Bate.
Bate also assaulted the victim and prevented her from attending A&E, on another occasion.
In May the same year, the victim was again assaulted by Bate in a vehicle.
She managed to escape onto Silverdale Road in Newcastle-under-Lyme, before being convinced to re-enter the vehicle.
The police force said that the victim was then held hostage by Bate, who strangled her in her own home.
Bate was arrested in June.
He denied the offences in interview, but later admitted what he had done in court.
Alongside his prison term, Bate was made subject of a restraining order to prevent any future contact with the victim and ordered to pay a surcharge of £228 upon his release.
A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: "If you have been affected by domestic abuse, you can find more about the support services available by visiting: Advice about domestic abuse | Staffordshire Police."
