A knife-wielding shoplifter from Newcastle-under-Lyme has been jailed and served with a criminal behaviour order.

Michael Haddon, 37, of Newcastle-under-Lyme, was sentenced to eight months in prison at Cannock Magistrates' Court on Friday (17 October).

Haddon pleaded guilty to possession of a knife in a public place and three counts of theft from a shop.

In September this year, Haddon was approached by a Police Community Support Officer outside Morrisons on Goose Street after acting aggressively towards a security guard.

When Haddon was asked if he had taken anything, he said no, and invited the officer to check his bag, which contained a large kitchen knife that was eight inches long.

Haddon was arrested and taken to custody.

CCTV from the shop also revealed that Haddon had been in there three times in one day and taken around £70 worth of items.

He was charged with the offences and taken to court, where he eventually pleaded guilty.

As part of his sentencing, he was also served with a criminal behaviour order (CBO) which bans Haddon from entering a number of stores across North Staffordshire for the next three years.

Haddon could face further prison time and fines if the rules are broken.

PC Heather Bolam, from the Newcastle-under-Lyme local policing team, said: "We're continuing to use all of the tools at our disposal to tackle burglary, theft and robbery across Staffordshire, and Haddon's sentencing is another example of that.

"We use CBOs regularly across the county in order to combat re-offending and manage those persistently committing shoplifting offences. They help us address the root cause of offending and help rehabilitate those responsible through positive action and intervention.

"It's one of the many tools we're using to problem solve in Staffordshire, making sure we do everything possible to address the main issues affecting residents and businesses in our local community."
