Library services could return to Fenton – more than a decade after the town's landmark building closed its doors.

Fenton Library at Baker Street closed in 2011 as part of council cuts.

But a new proposal put forward by Stoke-on-Trent City Council could see a ground floor area at Fenton Manor Leisure Centre converted into library space.

A 33 square metre area between the main entrance and café seating space has been earmarked for the facility and library users would be able to automatically check books in and out.

A planning statement submitted as part of the application said: "It was identified that given the high volume of footfall, twinned with the wide range of users, there was an opportunity to introduce another service to the building without negatively impacting on the primary function of the complex. It was felt that a small library area could be introduced which would create a new dynamic within the building.

"There is no public library within Fenton and so this proposal provides a service currently lacking. It is felt that through incorporating a small library provision in this building, community ties will be strengthened and new connections made between groups across the local area; this it is felt will benefit the community."
