Staffordshire Wildlife Trust's appeal to raise £20,000 to protect vulnerable wildlife from fires will close in seven days.

The charity has £1,000 left to raise in order that they can reach their target.

In dry weather, it is extremely easy for fires to take hold on nature reserves with strong winds quickly spreading fire across large areas of land.

Ground-nesting birds, small mammals, reptiles and insects are usually the first to perish, losing their nests, their young and their food sources in minutes.

In 2018, a fire at The Roaches saw more than 150 acres of moorland burned in just a few days, devastating local wildlife.

Staffordshire Wildlife Trust said: "This summer is already showing us what's at stake.

"Before the school holidays had even begun, record-breaking temperatures and heatwaves had dried out our landscapes.

"On the news, we are seeing fires burning across the UK.

"Fire crews across the UK are being stretched by multiple major blazes happening at the same time, as we've seen in Wales this week.

"In the Peak District, more than 600 hectares have been scorched by a single fire.

"That's the equivalent of 900 football pitches."

Donations will be used to create stronger natural firebreaks, improve water access, train staff to act quickly in emergencies and habitat restoration.

The Trust added: "Here at Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, we're holding our breath.

"As more people head outdoors this summer, all it takes is one spark for a fire to take hold, destroying precious habitats and the wildlife that depends on them.

"That's why we're asking for your help today.

"Please donate to help us be ready to respond, protect vulnerable habitats and work to reduce the risk of devastating fires before it's too late."
