A landmark pub in Newcastle-under-Lyme could be demolished and replaced with a four-storey block of flats, if plans are approved by councillors.

Mr Mark Chairman has applied to the borough council for permission to demolish The Jolly Potter, on Barracks Road, and construct a new four-storey block of flats in its place.

The new development would comprise of nine flats, underground parking and cycle spaces and a small commercial unit on the ground floor.

If approved, the pub would be demolished and nine flats would be built in its place (Nub News).

A planning application submitted back in October said: "The existing public house is in decline due to its isolation from the wider hospitality district to the west. The proximity of the existing public house to the nearby primary school presents a social conflict.

"A residential use at this location would present a more appropriate alternative and would be more beneficial to the school in its safeguarding role."

Newcastle Borough Council are meeting today (30 January) to make a decision on the application.
