Hundreds call for road safety improvements outside Stoke-on-Trent primary school

More than 200 people are calling for additional road safety measures outside a Stoke-on-Trent primary school.
No stopping restrictions and speed humps are already in place outside Ash Green Primary Academy in Trentham.
But campaigner Joanne Parsons says there are still problems with dangerous parking and blocked pavements in the mornings and afternoons, due to a minority of drivers ignoring the restrictions. She says the area around the school's Meadowside gate is a 'particular concern'.
Ms Parsons has launched a petition calling for Stoke-on-Trent City Council to do more to tackle these issues at Ash Green. At the time of writing, a total of 201 people had signed the online petition on the council website.
The petition states: "Every school day, hundreds of children walk, cycle, and travel to and from Ash Green Primary School. Yet during busy drop-off and pick-up periods, the roads surrounding the school are often affected by dangerous parking, congestion, blocked pavements, and unsafe driving. These conditions reduce visibility and make it more difficult for children to travel safely.
"We recognise and appreciate the measures already in place to improve road safety, however, we do not believe they go far enough to adequately protect children during the busiest times of day. Existing restrictions are too often ignored by a small minority of drivers, creating unnecessary risks for pupils and families.
"We are calling on Stoke-on-Trent City Council to introduce additional measures that put children's safety first."
Ms Parsons has also asked whether the council has assessed Ash Green for a School Streets scheme.
School Streets, which the council launched last year, involves roads around certain schools being closed to traffic during mornings and afternoons.
A total of 15 School Streets schemes are in operation around the city, with motorists facing fines for driving into the affected areas.
A spokesperson for Stoke-on-Trent City Council said: "We are aware of the parking situation at Ash Green Primary and this school – along with many others – is under consideration with respect to employing a variety of road safety features, many of which fall within the School Street scheme.
"We are specifically aware of issues around the Meadowside gate area and are actively considering options to make that area safer.
"Currently, we are undertaking a wider review of the School Street scheme across the city to examine its efficiency and effectiveness. Once that review is complete, we will be able to provide more information on safety measures that could be imposed in the vicinity of schools that are felt in need of appropriate traffic management."
The Ash Green petition will run until 17 July.
