Two pubs, a theatre and a post box are among the latest additions to a council's list of important buildings.

Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council has added nine new entries to its register of locally important buildings and structures following a review last year.

The register, which was created by the council in 2010, now has 144 buildings and structures, all of which are considered to have heritage value and contribute to the character of their area. The aim of the register is to raise awareness and celebrate local heritage, and to try and protect it from harmful change.

A building's inclusion on the register does not provide any additional planning controls but it can inform planning decisions. Members of the public nominated 15 buildings to be added to the register during thee review, and these were then considered by the assessors' panel.

These are the new additions to the register:

  • The Crown Inn, Brook Street, Silverdale
  • The Vine Inn, High Street, Silverdale
  • Milepost, Nantwich Road, Audley
  • Audley Theatre, Hall Street, Audley
  • Climbing Centre, Church Street, Audley (former market hall), including cobbles to frontage
  • Halmerend Bridge Abutment, Shraley Brook Road, Halmerend
  • Post box in wall at junction of Milesgreen Road, Rye Hills Score and Heathcote Road
  • School House, The Drive, Alsagers Bank
  • 31 Nantwich Road, Audley

The existing entry for Onneley Village Hall has also been amended to include the schoolhouse, boundary wall and post box, while the entry for a terrace of houses in High Street, Silverdale has been extended to include number 197.

Members of the planning committee voted to accept the latest additions to the register. Councillor Andrew Fear said: "This allows the community to engage and say 'these are the things that are valuable to use, this is what we'd like to preserve'. I think this is a really welcome document to have. I welcome this version, and I look forward to future versions."

Nominators and owners of the buildings being added to the register will be notified, and they will have the opportunity to send in representations to be considered by the council at the next review.
