A fine dining restaurant with food served on Longton ware is planned for an historic former pottery works in the town.

Plans have come forward to transform part of the ground floor at Sutherland Works into a restaurant and café – and Listed Building Consent is also sought for installation of a kitchen.

The proposed venue at the Grade II Listed Normacot Road site aims to attract both residents and tourists visiting The Potteries, a planning statement submitted as part of the application to Stoke-on-Trent City Council said.

There will be no external alterations to the building – and internal changes will be "cosmetic and decorative in the main with the addition of a kitchen area."

The statement added: "This is an exciting project for the local economy and the culture of Stoke-on-Trent. It will showcase both a significant heritage location, local pottery and dinnerware in addition to Staffordshire foods.

"Locally at Wedgwood, Lunar and the Tea Room are award-winning destinations that already showcase Wedgwood products with the finest of food and service.

"This proposal is to add a quality tourist and local offer in Longton with the former home of the important Sutherland pottery works which was part of the Hudson and Middleton pottery empires.

"It is proposed that the pottery link will run deep through this business model. The setting is iconic, the dining ware will be authentic Longton pottery ware with a focus on fine bone china and dishes will be carefully prepared and themed on pottery heritage.

"A dish named White Gold will be served; this dish is a direct reference to the pottery of the immediate local area.

"Dishes curated for the fine dining menu will celebrate the historic Spratslade Farm; which historically stretched between Longton and Trentham.

"Local businesses in Longton will also benefit from the opening of the café and dining experience as collaborations with other local ceramic heritage locations are in negotiation.

"Ingredients and produce from the local area will be inherent within the menu as sourcing of local pigs, cheese and dairy is already planned. Sourcing will also include Staffordshire wines where possible."

Stoke-on-Trent City Council has yet to make a decision on the proposals.
