A former carpet store in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, could be converted into three brand-new flats if plans are approved by the local council.

Mr Rakesh Morjaria, of RA Asset Management, has applied for permission to transform a former shop on Brick House Street into three one-bedroom flats.

The existing shopfront would be removed and the brick facade would be constructed to match the existing walls.

A statement of significance, submitted as part of the application, states: "The building would provide an excellent standard of accommodation suited to local people working in or near to the town centre of Burslem.

The shopfront would be removed and new walls would match the other buildings on Brick House Street, Burslem (Nub News).

"By converting some retail spaces to residential units, where appropriate - such as Brick House Street, several key benefits can be realized. Firstly, the introduction of additional housing helps address the housing shortage, particularly the need for affordable housing, in the area. This attracts new residents and supports population growth, thereby increasing vibrancy and economic activity.

"Additionally, the incorporation of mixed-use development within the area promotes a diverse range of land uses, fostering economic vitality and attracting businesses, services, and amenities. The improved visual appearance resulting from the conversion enhances the overall streetscape and aesthetics, instilling a sense of pride and ownership among residents and visitors.

"Furthermore, the presence of residential units increases footfall and activity, benefiting local businesses, stimulating entrepreneurship, and creating a dynamic and safe environment"

A decision is expected regarding these plans in the coming months.
