Enforcement of new traffic restrictions at a Stoke-on-Trent primary school has been delayed by seven months.

The School Streets scheme at Hillside Primary School, in Baddeley Green, was launched by Stoke-on-Trent City Council in February.

School Streets involves motorists being barred from roads around a school during the mornings and afternoons, in order to improve safety for pupils and parents.

But enforcement of the Hillside scheme has been delayed due to the need to install columns and power supplies for the cameras.

The council says that enforcement will now begin in September.

Ward councillor Dave Evans raised concerns over the scheme's impact on neighbouring streets during a full council meeting.

He said: "Are there plans to do any sort of safety assessments on the streets that surround the School Streets scheme? Traffic is displaced during those peak times into the neighbouring streets. It's important that residents live there also have that assessment."

Councillor Finlay Gordon-McCusker, cabinet member for regeneration, said a review of the School Streets schemes across the city would look at this issue.

The Hillside School Streets scheme bans vehicles from Field Avenue, Hill View, Malstone Avenue, Sandown Place, Sunridge Close and Fletcher Crescent from 8.15am to 9.15am and from 2.45pm to 4pm. There are plans to expand the scheme to include Stoneycroft.

For the first six months after the cameras become operational, motorists will receive a warning letter instead of a £70 fixed penalty notice. Residents can apply for exemption permits.
