A councillor is calling for a zebra crossing at a city junction to boost safety for families walking to school, and older residents.

Lauren Davison's online petition closes on Tuesday (September 1), meaning residents have just hours left to back her campaign urging Stoke-on-Trent City Council to install a zebra crossing on the junction of Colclough Road and Stanton Road, in Meir.

The petition said: "This is a major walk-to-school route used daily by children and families. It is also an essential crossing point for older residents of Rowan Village and Lime Tree Court accessing shops, bus stops, and local services.

"Residents have long raised concerns about speeding on Colclough Road, making this junction difficult and to cross safely, especially for those who may need extra time.

"A pedestrian crossing would make the route to school safer, improve accessibility for older residents, reduce the danger posed by speeding traffic, encourage walking and active travel (and) help prevent accidents before they happen.

"We urge the council to act now and provide a safe crossing at this busy junction."

Nearby residents gave a mixed reaction to the proposal however.

Mum Fikeelet Demcoj supported the measure to improve safety. She said: "Sometimes when I drop my kids off at school the cars turn a bit fast – it's not very good."

But another mum who lives nearby said: "I don't see why there should be a zebra crossing. You can cross easily."

David Johnson said: "It's a one way road now. I don't think it will make much difference – it was dangerous before when it was a two-way street.

Brian Bourne, who has lived in the area for 76 years, said Stanton Road was "like Wacky Races" however. He added: "They need some sleeping bobbies in the street – they want to do something about it, it's ridiculous.

"It used to be a main bus route. Today, everyone is in a hurry.

"They made it a one-way street 10 years ago and it's a racetrack now, drivers know nothing are coming through the other way. A zebra crossing would make no difference – they'd run you over."
