Council bosses say they will patch up a crumbling junction in Meir Heath when they can but have promised ad hoc repairs in the meantime.

It comes as a Lib Dem borough councillor continues his ongoing campaign to fix potholes in his Fulford ward.

Cllr Alec Sandiford believes the county highways department has overlooked his area for years, and has repeatedly highlighted the crumbling state of the area's roads.

He says the Windmill Roundabout on the A520 – which connects Windmill Hill and Sandon Road – is in dire need of repair and he's called for greater urgency.

Cllr Sandiford said: "I've been campaigning within my ward for years now to have improved services – in particular, road improvements.

"So far the county council have ignored or refused to listen properly to residents' concerns.

"The Windmill Roundabout is on a very busy road, it's used by a huge number of vehicles and by residents from Rough Close and Meir Heath."

Authorities had pledged to fix the road over the summer but so far, nothing has been done (Google).

He said authorities had pledged to patch up the road over the summer, but so far the work hasn't taken place and he believes residents are feeling abandoned as a result.

He said: "The work was promised to be conducted by the end of July, that hasn't happened.

"There's really anger, frustration and dismay from local residents wanting to know why work was promised and it hasn't gone ahead.

"Really, it's not good enough. The area just feels like it's being forgotten about and left behind. Residents deserve better than this."

He said the road surface was cracked like dried earth in the desert, and was becoming a danger to motorists.

He complained that people pay their fair share of council tax but aren't getting an equal service when compared to other areas of the county.

Staffordshire County Council defended its approach to highway repairs, saying it is investing millions into keeping the county's roads in a good condition.

Bosses said highways officers will get round to fixing the Windmill Roundabout when they can, but will carry out ad hoc repairs in the meantime.

Cllr David Williams, cabinet member for highways, said: "Good roads are important for residents, motorists and of course the economy and it is important to invest in keeping them safe and well maintained.

"That's why we are investing £30 million on our roads over the next two years.

"Our highways crews are aware of the issues at the junction and have already made a number of repairs on the Hilderstone Road approach.

"Further maintenance and repairs are also planned for the new year and will be done as soon as possible and when resources are available.

"In the meantime, teams will continue to monitor the area and will carry out any ad hoc repairs to keep the road in a safe condition.

"This is a well-used junction and longer term we plan to carry out a major resurfacing scheme which will help prolong the life of the road.

"This work will be done when the required resources are available."
