A Conservative councillor has been suspended by his party.

Joe Porter, who represents Brown Edge and Endon on Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, was suspended by the Conservative Party last week following allegations of 'wrongdoing'.

The party has also referred the matter to the police. Cllr Porter is currently sitting as a non-aligned member on the district council.

A Conservative Party spokesperson said: "The Conservative Party takes all allegations of wrongdoing seriously, as part of our ongoing investigation into this matter a referral has been made to the police.

"Mr Porter remains suspended from the Conservative Party at this time, and it would not be right to comment on an ongoing investigation."

Cllr Porter has been a district councillor since 2019 and previously served as a cabinet member. He is also a member of Endon with Stanley and Brown Edge parish councils, and used to work in Staffordshire Police's contact centre.

Cllr Porter has been one of the most prominent local councillors in North Staffordshire in recent years, being involved in campaigns such as 'No to Stoke' and StandUp4Brexit.

He has also held the role as chairman of the Staffordshire Moorlands Conservative Association.
