Charity planning to open new shop in place of vacant carpet store in Stoke-on-Trent
A local charity is planning to open a new shop in Stoke-on-Trent - replacing a vacant carpet store.
Carpetright closed its store on Etruria Road, Hanley, last year after the company went into administration.
This week, Dougie Mac Hospice applied for permission for the "variation of condition 2 of planning SOT/25987" at the vacant unit.
This condition was put in place in 1991 and grants the shop permission to sell "carpets and floor coverings, bed and bedding products only and for no other purpose".
The Application Form says: "The proposed tenant will be Douglas Macmillan Hospice who will use the premises to sell clothing, furniture, household goods and charity items to visiting members of the public (Use Class E).
"We require the current condition that states 'The premises shall be used for the sale of carpets and floor coverings and bed and bedding products only and for no other purpose including any other in Class A1 of the Schedule' to be REMOVED."
A supporting statement adds: "The existing site access arrangements remain suitable for the proposed use, as there is no material difference in the operational characteristics between the former Carpetright store and the proposed second-hand shop. Both uses fall under the same retail use class E, meaning their access requirements—including customer arrivals, service vehicle movements, and staff access—are comparable."
Stoke Nub News has approached Dougie Mac for comment.
