The Teapot at Milton, on Millrise Road, Milton, opened earlier this month (4 February) and has a distinct focus on being inclusive, particularly for those on the autism spectrum.

The new cafe is open Monday to Saturday, although Sundays are available for party bookings.

The cafe closed in November 2022 due to ill health of the previous owners, now Katie Ward has taken over the venue and aims to make it the heart of the Milton community.

Katie said: "The opportunity came about and I thought maybe that's something I can do, I've always wanted my own cafe and I've always been into baking and cooking."

Katie's son, 6, has autism so it was important to her to make the cafe welcoming and inclusive, especially for those on the autism spectrum.

She said: "For me, everywhere should be autism-friendly, it shouldn't really matter, but the reason it's more highlighted is that I've got a child with autism and additional needs and it needed to be somewhere that he was comfortable to come.

"You assume that everywhere is autism-friendly, but then you go somewhere and people will pull faces at you and they'll complain if your child has a meltdown and I don't want that here, it doesn't matter if your child is screaming the place down."

To ensure that the cafe caters for everyone, Katie has made simple adjustments such as simplifying the children's menu, ensuring that the lights aren't too bright, not playing loud music and creating open space for children to explore.

Katie said: "It's about the acceptance of the staff as well, we won't question it if there's a child in the corner rocking back and forth, it's about accepting that everyone is different."

The Teapot will be holding various events over half-term next week.

On Wednesday 22 February, families can book a 90 minute slot to have a meal, paint a ceramic ornament and decorate a cupcake.

Saturday 25 February is Family Pizza Night, where families can create and enjoy homemade pizzas using a selection of fresh ingredients.

Pre-booking for these events is essential, to book your place call The Teapot on 07930615863 or email [email protected]
