40,000 potholes across Staffordshire to be repaired by April 2027 claim council
By Livia Gregor 5th Oct 2026
Staffordshire highways crews had a record-breaking month for pothole repairs this September, fixing over 5000 defects.
This is more than twice the 2,498 repaired during the same period last year.
It comes as part of Staffordshire County Council's efforts to improve the county's roads and reduce the pothole backlog.
According to the county council: "The numbers mean the council is on track to meet its target of repairing 40,000 potholes by 1 April 2027, as part of a wider plan to stop road conditions getting worse and make lasting improvements for residents."
The council's highways improvement programme aims to complete a greater number of repairs while using new methods to reduce disruption for local people.
Crews have been utilising repair methods such as velocity patching which allows defects to be repaired quickly by cleaning the area, sealing it and applying stone and bitumen in one operation.
Cllr Peter Mason, Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways at Staffordshire County Council, said: "Our crews worked extremely hard throughout September.
"These figures show what can be achieved through hard work, new ideas and making the most of every opportunity.
"Repairing more than 5,000 potholes in one month is a major achievement.
"It is more than twice the number we repaired in September last year.
"The good weather helped, but our highways teams also worked very hard to improve roads across Staffordshire.
"We will keep working to improve.
"Residents have told us that better roads are a priority, and we are making good progress towards our target of repairing 40,000 potholes by April 2027.
"This work is also helping to reduce the wider backlog of repairs that has built up over many years."
